The TQUK Level 3 Certificate in Understanding Autism course assesses the following units:
Unit 1: Understand the diagnosis and management of autism spectrum conditions
In this unit, you will learn about a range of characteristics, traits and behaviours that might be displayed by individuals on the autism spectrum. You will gain knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of achieving a formal diagnosis for individuals on the autism spectrum and their family. You will learn about categories that are used to support the diagnosis of an individual with an autism spectrum condition and factors which might impact such a diagnosis. You will become more aware of historical research carried out relating to autism and the challenges of an autism spectrum condition where it is present with a co-occurring condition. From this, you will be able to understand a range of interventions that can be used to help manage autism spectrum conditions. You will learn about the advantages and disadvantages of a range of therapeutic interventions used to help manage autism spectrum conditions and the ways in which common co-occurring conditions are managed through intervention or treatment.
Unit 2: Understand best practice in the context of autism spectrum conditions
In this unit, you will learn about a range of safeguarding concerns which may be relevant to individuals on the autism spectrum. You will also understand the term ‘restrictive practice’, when the use of restrictive practice may be necessary and how these may impact individuals on the autism spectrum. You will gain an understanding of how an advocate can contribute to the wellbeing and protection of individuals on the autism spectrum and why an individual on the autism spectrum may be more likely to suffer harm, abuse or exploitation. You will learn about the importance of adopting a proactive approach to supporting an individual on the autism spectrum and how to include the role of partnership working in this. You will understand what is meant by the ‘person-centred approach’ and how to promote the implementation of this when working with an individual on the autism spectrum. You will gain knowledge of ways to facilitate positive social interaction through tailoring your own communication style and using different forms of augmentative and alternative communication. Finally, you will learn how to encourage an individual on the autism spectrum to communicate and interact through the involvement of a specialist and how to promote communication and integration including the implementation of strategies to encourage social interaction.
Unit 3: Legislation, guidance, information and support relevant to autism spectrum conditions
In this unit, you will learn about the legislation that is in place to support individuals on the autism spectrum and their families and some of the kinds of support available to individuals including that which is local, national, voluntary and independent. You will also learn about why individuals on the autism spectrum and their families may not access services available to them and how to ensure that such barriers are overcome. You will gain knowledge about how to help an autistic person access employment opportunities and about the importance of individuals on the autism spectrum and their families being able to provide feedback.
Unit 4: Autism Spectrum Conditions and behaviour
In this unit, you will learn about how an individual’s behaviour is influenced by a range of factors and how to identify triggers and patterns of behaviour in individuals on the autism spectrum. You will also gain knowledge of the reasons why it is important to distinguish between positive and negative behaviour displayed by an individual on the autism spectrum and how to view behaviour of an individual on the autism spectrum in the context of their condition. You will learn about how an individual on the autism spectrum behaviour can impact on themselves, others and can how it can make them vulnerable. You will also learn how reflecting on their behaviour can help an individual manage the way that they behave moving forwards. You will be given information about how to plan behavioural support for an individual on the autism spectrum and about intervention strategies that can be utilised when an individual on the autism spectrum is displaying distressed behaviour. You will learn a range of techniques which can be used to de-escalate a situation where an individual on the autism spectrum is displaying distressed behaviour and about the importance of respecting an individual while they are displaying distressed behaviour.
Unit 5: Living with autism spectrum conditions in society
In this unit, you will learn about the role of the media in shaping perceptions of individuals on the autism spectrum and some current representations of autism spectrum conditions in the media and in culture and art. You will also learn about the impact of positive and negative representation of autism spectrum conditions in the media and arts on individuals on the autism spectrum. You will be given information about the term ‘emotional resilience’ how a person can demonstrate this. You will learn about some significant life events experienced by individuals which involve change and how individuals on the autism spectrum might experience significant life events in a more challenging way, as well as ways that an individual on the autism spectrum can be supported through significant life event changes. You will gain knowledge about the challenges that might be experienced by an individual on the autism spectrum who is looking for work and the positive aspects of employing individuals on the autism spectrum for both employer and employee, as well as ways to help an individual on the autism spectrum access employment opportunities and maintain an employed position. You will learn about how an individual on the autism spectrum with and/or co-occurring conditions may experience difficulties communicating and interacting in everyday life and about a range of barriers to communication an individual on the autism spectrum may experience when communicating with others. Finally, you will learn how to support low levels of stress and anxiety in an individual on the autism spectrum.

What are the payment options?

How do I see my course material/resources?
Everything that you will need for your course will be accessible on our online campus. You can select the online and paper versions of most of our courses too, if you select this option then there will be an additional £35 cost, this covers the cost of us printing out a full course pack in a ring binder folder and sending out via Royal Mail 1st Class, Tracked & Signed delivery.
How do I log in and access my course?
Once you have enrolled then you have access to the campus right away to get started on your course. You can log in by going to our website and clicking ‘Log in’ at the top right hand side of the page. Your username is the email address that you used to enrol and your password is the one you created at the checkout when enrolling.
When will I receive my certificate?
Once you have completed and passed all units and your course is paid in full (either paid in full upon enrolment or if paying monthly then the remaining balance paid or monthly payments complete), then we can request your certificate from the Awarding Body. Certificate’s take 6-12 weeks to arrive with us and once we receive it we will then contact you to confirm the address to post it to. Certificate’s are sent via Royal Mail 1st Class, Tracked & Signed delivery.
What happens if I fail an assignment?
If you fail an assignment, then please do not worry! You can resubmit your assignment as many times as needed until you pass. Each time you submit an assignment then your tutor will mark it and provide feedback, you can then make the amendments and resubmit and have the new version marked again.
How long does it take to mark my work?
We have a marking timescale of 5 working days from the submission, your tutor will mark your work and provide feedback with if you need to make any amendments to enable you to pass. Please note, we do ask that learners don’t upload more than one submission at a time as this will delay the marking not just for yourself but for other learners too.
Do I have to attend or view any live/virtual lessons?
You don’t, everything is in written, text, image and diagram format. You will have access to the campus 24/7 to be able to log in and complete your work. You won’t need to view any videos or audio lessons.
What device can I/shall I use?
As you will have assignments to write and type up for submission then we would recommend using a computer or laptop for this as you will need to use a software such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs to type these. You may also be able to use an iPad/tablet for this. You can use a smartphone if you wish but you may find it difficult and it would probably be easier on a larger screen/device.

Once you have enrolled and accessed the campus you will see your assignment tasks and criteria of what needs to be covered in each assignment.
