Unit 1 – Common traits and diagnosis of autism spectrum conditions

In this unit, you will learn about the common traits and diagnosis of autism spectrum conditions.

We will discuss how people with autism spectrum conditions will experience these characteristics differently. The unit will also define the terms ‘neurodiverse’ and ‘neurotypical’.

You will explore the ‘dyad of impairments’ and how it might be seen as both positive and negative. The unit will outline how an autism diagnosis is made and the importance of seeking a professional diagnosis of autism.

Unit 2 – Sources of information, support, legislation and guidance relevant to autism spectrum conditions

In this unit, we will explore the legislation and guidance relevant to autism spectrum conditions, how they inform the diagnosis and management of autism and how they support those with co-occurring learning disabilities. You will also learn the relevant legislation regarding confidentiality, equality, mental capacity and upholding the best interests of individuals. We will explore the support available to those with autism and their family and carers. The unit will also describe what reasonable adjustments are and why they should be made.

You will explore the importance of supportive facilities, equipment and services to those with autism spectrum conditions. The unit will then describe how those with autism spectrum conditions can be supported to access education, employment and healthcare in a way that promotes their wellbeing and autonomy. We will also cover how to assist an individual with autism when they are distressed.

Finally, we will discuss the historical and sometimes problematic research that has been done regarding autism.

We will explore how autism impacts an individual’s social, cognitive and physical experiences. We will also discuss the common strengths and abilities of those with autism spectrum conditions.

The unit will define what a sensory processing disorder is and how sensory differences affect how individuals process information. The unit will cover what triggers cause hyposensitivity and hypersensitivity. We will examine how sensitivities can manifest in behaviour and how that might impact the person with autism and those around them.

You will explore how societal views impact people with autism, how unintentional discrimination can lead to problems, and how someone with autism may be at risk of being taken advantage of or bullied.

We will discuss the support available to those with autism, and the challenges carers and family may face when caring for those with autism. You will develop your understanding of how environments may be designed to support those with autism through adjustments to sensory input.

Unit 4 – Best practice relating to autism spectrum conditions

In this unit, we will cover the best practices when supporting, interacting with and protecting individuals living with autism spectrum conditions.

The unit will discuss how to support those with autism using person-centred partnership working. Including how you can provide empathic and non-judgemental care which advocates for the safety and wellbeing of the individual.

We will explore how to communicate with people with autism spectrum conditions effectively. We will also cover supporting someone with sensory differences and support needs.

You will look at various ways of managing distressed behaviours and consider different approaches whilst analysing the strengths and weaknesses of using reactive strategies to encourage positive behaviour. You will also explore how to support individuals to manage their own behaviours in healthy ways.
