Upon completion of this qualification, students are awarded a TQUK Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism certificate and an OLC Certificate. All certification fees are included in your course fees. This qualification is suitable for a range of different career paths in settings such as:

Qualification
To gain the full TQUK Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism certification you will need to submit and pass all of the tutor marked assignments. Unit 1 – Signs, symptoms and diagnosis of autism
In this unit, you will learn about the signs, symptoms and diagnosis of autism. You will learn how to recognise the main signs and symptoms of autism and understand how these can be displayed in diverse ways by individuals. You will look at how the ‘triad of impairments’ might be seen as both positive and negative and understand the importance of seeking a professional diagnosis of autism.

- Recognise signs and symptoms of autism

- Understand the importance of professional diagnosis of autism
Unit 2 – Sources of information and support, legislation, and policy relevant to autism
In this unit, you will learn about the different sources of information, support and legislation and guidance that is relevant to autism. You will look at an individual with autism’s rights in terms of equality and disability and discover what facilities and services are available to them.
You will then go on to learn about the importance of supporting an autistic individual and how this can be done in a range of scenarios, before finally identifying ways of supporting individuals who are hoping to enter the workplace.

- Understand legislation and guidance relevant to autism
- Supporting an autistic individual in a range of scenarios
Unit 3 – Living with autism
In this unit, you will learn how autism can affect an individual’s cognitive and physical experiences. You will look at how sensory processing disorders can affect the way in which an individual may process information and how hyposensitivity and hypersensitivity can manifest themselves in behaviour that might impact both the person with autism and those around them. Finally, you will explore how society itself impacts a person with autism and how unintentional discrimination can lead to problems and how a person with autism may risk being taken advantage of or bullied.

- Understand how autism may affect an individual’s cognitive experiences
- Understand how autism may affect an individual’s physical experiences
- Understand how autism may affect an individual’s behaviour
- Understand the impacts of autism on the family of an autistic person
- Understand how society impacts upon a person with autism
- Understand how the physical environment impacts upon a person with autism
Unit 4 – Best practice relating to autism
In this unit you will discover best practices when supporting, interacting with and protecting individuals living with autism. You will look at various ways of managing behaviour that challenges and consider a number of different approaches whilst analysing the strengths and weaknesses of using reactive strategies to encourage positive behaviour. Finally, you will consider the ways in which individuals living with autism might be vulnerable to being bullied and exploited and look at ways to minimise the risks whilst supporting individuals to act independently.

- Understand best practice in providing support to individuals who live with autism
- Understand best practice when interacting with individuals who live with autism
- Understand best practice in managing sensory needs of individuals living with autism
- Understand best practice in managing behaviours of individuals living with autism
- Understand best practice in supporting individuals living with autism to manage their own behaviour
- Understand best practice in protecting individuals living with autism
This course can be taken over a 12 month period but you can complete it as fast or as slowly as you wish.
