About this Level 4 Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTA) Course

Our TQUK Level 4 HLTA qualification allows teaching assistants to become qualified HLTAs within a school or college. HLTA status is highly regarded and allows holders to apply for job roles at this level within education. This course enables you to work towards HLTA status from home and at your own pace, navigating through the written and practical assignments with the assistance of a supportive tutor every step of the way.

Entry Requirements: Learners must be employed in a suitable role within a school or college. Previous Level 3 study is a clear advantage but wealth of experience, knowledge and understanding working in schools or colleges is a requirement for this qualification.

Upon completion of this qualification, students are awarded a TQUK Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants certificate and an OLC Certificate. All certification fees are included in your course fees. This qualification is suitable for a range of different career paths in settings such as:

Qualification

To gain the full TQUK Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTA) certification you will need to submit and pass all of the tutor marked assignments and practical assessments. There are 6 written assignments in the course and 8 practical assessments. There is no need to purchase any textbooks as we provide all of the lessons and materials required to learn the syllabus.

There is no formal exam and the certification fee is included in the course fees.

Assessments

To pass this course learners must pass 6 written assignments and 8 practical assessments. These are completed after navigating through the corresponding lessons and writing your answers to assignment questions. Once these have been read and marked by your personal tutor, feedback and marks are provided to students which contain helpful tips to improve work in future assignments.

This HLTA course requires a combination of written assignments and practical assessments. You therefore must have a job or voluntary placement in a school or college environment in order to complete this course. The course is assessed by both knowledge based written assignments and practical tasks (which are witnessed by a colleague).

The TQUK Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants course assesses the following units:

Unit 1 – Understand the Higher Level Teaching Assistant Role

In this unit, learners will consider diverse approaches to pedagogy that influence holistic learning in children and young people. The learner will also explore statutory planning and monitoring requirements in their own UK home nation.

Topics in this unit include:

  • Understand the functions of and requirements for being a Higher Level Teaching Assistant
  • Understand the requirements for continuing professional development specific to the role of the Higher Level Teaching Assistant
  • Understand how to work as a team and share effective practice with a colleague

Unit 2 – Child Development and Welfare

Through this unit, you will explore the work of some of the many theorists whose theoretical perspectives cover a variety of ideas for all areas of child development.

Topics in this unit include:

  • Understand the phases of child development
  • Be able to analyse the factors that affect children’s development
  • Understand the impact that parents and carers can have on the welfare and development of a child
  • Understand how support frameworks can influence the development and welfare of children and young people

Unit 3 – Awareness of Special Educational Needs

This unit will help you to build on your confidence and knowledge surrounding the importance of special educational needs and disabilities and will enable you to mentor other practitioners and work in partnership with parents/carers and other professionals.

Topics in this unit include:

  • Understand the special educational needs and code of practice and disabilities legislation which relate to supporting learners
  • Understand the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion legislation and codes of practice
  • Understand how to support children and young people who have special educational needs
  • Understand the special educational requirements of learners with sensory and/or physical impairments
  • Understand how to provide support for children and young people with English as an additional language

Unit 4 – Promoting Positive Behaviour in Children and Young People

In this unit, the learner will explore how to manage and respond to behaviour that challenges in children and young people. The unit will examine a range of strategies that can be used in response to negative behaviour.

Topics in this unit include:

  • Understand policies and procedures which promote positive behaviour in children and young people
  • Promote positive behaviours in children and young people
  • Address challenging and inappropriate behaviour from children and young people
  • Contribute to reviews of behaviour and behaviour management policies

Unit 5 – Providing Support for Individual Learners and Small Groups

Through this unit, you will explore some of the diverse needs of families, and reflect on how best to overcome barriers to partnership working with families.

Topics in this unit include:

  • Provide support for individual learners
  • Provide support for small groups of learners

Unit 6 – Developing Skills to Promote Positive Working Relationships

This unit will explain how to communicate with children, young people, parents, carers and colleagues. The information outlines the different types of communication such as verbal and written.

  • Be able to communicate with children, young people, colleagues, parents and carers
  • Be able to work collaboratively with colleagues

Unit 7 – Curriculum Planning, Delivery and Assessment

In this final unit, you will explore the planning and assessment of children and young people. The unit will show the importance of doing assessments and the outcomes for children.

Topics in this unit include:

  • Plan and deliver lessons which meet the objectives and intended outcomes of learning activities designed for a range of age groups and abilities
  • Understand how to use ICT skills to support teaching and learning
  • Use a range of strategies to set learning objectives and monitor progress and attainment
  • Be able to monitor learners’ progress through maintaining and analysing records

This course can be taken over a 12 month period but you can complete it as fast or as slowly as you wish.

What entry requirements are there for this course?

You should only enrol on this course if you have a strong background working in schools and colleges. A previous Level 3 TA qualification is preferred but not essential.

How long do I have to study?

This HLTA course has an enrolment length of 12 months included from the date you enrol. This is plenty of time to complete the assignments but you can purchase additional time for £60 per month should you need longer to finish the assignments.

Do I have to sit an exam?

No, there are no exams on this course. Everything is assessed through coursework which you can submit at any time within the enrolment length.

Am I assigned a tutor for this course?

Yes – all students are assigned to a personal tutor who will be in charge of your tuition. The same tutor marks all of your work as well as being available to answer any questions you may have throughout your enrolment period.

Do I need to be working to do the TQUK Level 4 Higher Level Teaching Assistants course?

Yes, you do need a work placement. This placement can be paid or voluntary. The placement will allow you to complete the practical aspects of the course which requires you to undertake certain activities and have a colleague sign a witness testimony to verify completion.
